MISSION

 

The Sankofa Academic Enrichment After School Program of Canaan Baptist Church intends to provide a quality after school program for children ages 5 through 12 through implementing a holistic curriculum that will support school academic success.

We are committed to providing an effective program that will build nurturing links around our children to support their growth and developmental needs necessary to become successful adults in the 21st century.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION


The Sankofa Enrichment & Arts After School Program curriculum is designed to: 

  • Implement individualized and small group support activities

  • Match children’s learning styles with activities

  • Nurture the spiritual, mental, social, physical and emotional needs of children

  • Motivate an interest in making and achieving goals

  • Foster a sense of community and belonging

  • Explore performance and visual art abilities

 

PROGRAM ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

 

Homework assistance; academic tutoring in reading and math; book clubs, math clubs; author’s workshop; French; computers; heritage classes; special projects; chess


PERFORMING ARTS 
ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

 

Dance instruction with Jamie Laughlin, renowned dance performer

  • African Dance

  • Jazz Dance

  • Hip-Hop Dance

  • Additional activities: tennis; ice-skating, trips; arts and crafts; African Drumming

 

HOURS AND CALENDAR
Monday through Friday
3:00-6:30 P.M.

 

The Sankofa Program will follow the Philadelphia School District calendar. 
Accommodations for childcare on the days of early dismissal from the Philadelphia Public Schools will be provided.

 

TRANSPORTATION

 

Van transportation to the Sankofa program is available for your convenience.

 

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

 

Opportunities for parental involvement include: the Sankofa Advisory Board; Sankofa Parents’ Association; volunteer services; workshops and family events. Partnering with parents is crucial to our success. 

 

TUITION

 

Tuition includes transportation, meal and all activities.

 

Fees are payable weekly or bi-weekly.
